RESEARCH QUESTION

How can the construction of spatial narrative inform by critical studies of what it means to ‘play’ to produce prototypes for the workspace that encourages or supports employees to play everything in the office environment?

RESEARCH METHODS 3D Visualization/Prototyping –

It is a critical tool to explore and prototype the conceptual idea to understand my research. The engagement of this method allows physical or digital interactions, which allowed me to push my practice further into something more than the office environment.

Drawing/sketching –

To document the stories and narratives of the environment. This method will build the bridge to the understanding and expressing of the playfulness of the office environment.

Case Studies –

It is a tool that allows me to explore the possibility of my practice and locate or test the various of ‘plays’ in the limitation of office environment.

Iterative Research –

It is a method based on the process of testing, refining, and analyzing. The main intention is to ultimately develop the quality and functionality of the playfulness in the office environment.

Field Research –

To understand or observe the existing design and interact with the physical environment to document the existing achievements or benefits.

Reading - Bogost, Ian. Play anything: The pleasure of limits, the uses of boredom, and the secret of games. Basic Books, 2016.

The collaboration of free play theory and order of the office environment is developed through the selected vital methodology of narratology. I am investigating storytelling, which led me to the narrative play. We are always learning and interact through different storytelling with some plays. It gives us context and purpose. The book ‘Play anything’ which was written by Ian Bogost, one of the foremost writers on gaming culture. Bogost explores the means of ‘play’ and conveys the reader to ‘play everything’ “play is what happens when we accept these limitations, narrow our focus, and, consequently, have fun.” [2] Accepting the office environment is the first starting point of this practice and manipulating the playfulness in certain boundaries to create different storytelling to individual employees. As my target audience is workers who are working in the office environment, I aim to prototype the fun and play in traditional office environment limitations. “Soccer wouldn't be soccer if it wasn't composed of two teams of eleven players using only their feet, heads, and torsos to get a ball into a goal.” [2] Manipulating a ball into a goal is not different than accepting ordinary environments such as our daily routine like preparing presentations and concepts as for the meaning of the play. I was able to create the framework of filling life and space with play, through the prototyping spatial narratives with constraints and limitations to investigate what might the benefit be in working playfully.
